RICHLAND COUNTY - The Richland County Emergency Management Agency will observe Ohio's Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week and National Flood Safety Awareness Weak March 17th through March 23rd.

The decision to observe is in an effort to retain Richland County's "Storm Ready" designation, bestowed by the National Weather Service. The Richland County Board of Commissioners issued the proclamation of observance in order to ensure the designation remain.

In a press release sent to WMFD Thursday, Deputy Director Rick Evans stresses the importance of preparedness. Among the tips offered are having a thorough knowledge of your own weather safety plans and knowing what to do during a flood or thunder and lightning storm. Evans stresses that citizens should know the difference between storm watches and storm warnings.

Evans advises that Richland County will participate in a statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 20th at 9:50 A.M. Also covered in the release is Emergency Preparedness Kits and Emergency Weather Radios. Radios are available for purchase at the EMA office at 597 Park Avenue West for $23.00 (cash only). Vital information will be broadcast over those radios in the event of a weather catastrophe. Kits should be customized to meet the needs of the family and should consider household safety, people with disabilities, pets, and vehicles.

Skywarn, a dedicated group of weather spotters, is a key partner for the EMA. These are local individuals trained by the National Weather Service to provide information to the NWS to assist them in forecasting accurate information for our region.
