ASHLAND, OH - Detectives from the Ashland County Sheriff's Office said that the body found in a room at the Motel 8 in Ashland Wednesday may have been there since Saturday evening.

Wednesday evening a request from an employee at the Super 8 Motel on U.S. Route 250 said a foul smell was coming from one of the rooms. Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Deputies and Ashland Police Division Officers, along with Ashland EMS, responded to the scene.

The door was locked from the inside with the lock slide chain, but deputies gained access to the room to discover the body of a 34-year-old male. Ashland County Coroner's Office was then notified along with Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Detective Lieutenant Scott Smart.

Deputies and first responders had to acquire respirator equipment from the Ashland Fire Department to remain in the motel room while working the scene.

Lieutenant Smart said, “We are not investigating this as a homicide... We believe it will be an overdose.” The Ashland County Sheriff's Office says that the man checked into the room on Saturday afternoon and likely died later that evening, although this timeline can only be confirmed pending autopsy results. The body was sent to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner for autopsy.
