BUCYRUS, OH - Safety belt usage is a primary focus for the Ohio State Highway Patrol, particularly for the next month with Troopers' participation in the Click it or Ticket campaign.

The campaign begins on May 13th and runs until June 2nd. Expect to see troopers out on the road encouraging drivers to be safe and wear their belts.

In 2018 Ohio's observed seat belt usage rate was just under 85%, a small increase from 82.8% in 2017. This is promising change, but Ohio's 84.9% usage rate clocks in almost 5 percent lower than the national average of 89.6%.

In 2017 and 2018, 1,326 drivers or occupants in cars involved in crashes were killed when a seatbelt was available but not in use. Another 6,021 of those individulas were seriously injured.

"There is no disputing that buckling up saves lives," said Lieutenant Scott Rike, Bucyrus Post Commander. "We want everyone on the road to get home safe, that's why it's important to buckle up every trip, every time."

In 2018 121,019 people were convicted of driving or riding without a safety belt.
