MANSFIELD, OH - In honor of National Foster Care Month, Tuesday afternoon Richland County Children Services hosted a luncheon to celebrate the organizations and individuals in the community who have served children in foster care.

Foster parents, family members, volunteers, community leaders, and child welfare professionals gathered to thank members of the community who work hard to better the lives of children in foster care. A few attendees were surprised to find that they were being awarded for their hard work during the event.

Retired Juvenile Court Judge Ron Spon, The New Store, Crossroads Church, and Berean Baptist Church were each awarded "The Ronald D. Spon Award for Service to Children." This new award, named in honor of Judge Spon's legacy, will be given to any entity or person in the community who goes above and beyond in providing service to children in Richland County.

Each of this award's recipients have done just that. Judge Spon, during his 42 years of public service, fought for underserved youths and called his many successes the greatest joy in his life. The New Store is a project that was opened by the Richland County Children's Auxiliary in 2007 to provide clothing and a normal "shopping experience" for children in need. Crossroads Community Church offers many outreach programs, one of which is the "Adopt a Child" Christmas Project that helps provide gifts, clothing, bikes, and beds to nearly 1,000 local children annually. Berean Baptist Church has brightened the holidays for foster families for over 25 years now by hosting an Annual Foster Christmas Party at their church.

Each of these organizations and individuals have found their own way to better the lives of Richland County's foster children and their foster families.
