MANSFIELD, OH - The Mansfield Division of Police held a press conference on Tuesday to release new information into the investigation of an officer involved shooting that occurred in Mid-March.

In the press conference, authorities shared 911 calls, dispatch calls, and photos of the scene to those in attendance.

On March 18th Mansfield Officers responded to an apartment complex in the area of 650 West Straub Road in Mansfield for a disturbance.

According to Assistant Chief Keith Porch of the Mansfield Police Department, the incident began when an altercation broke out in apartment 208 of the apartment complex located on Straub Road. Around 4:25 PM, Mansfield Police Dispatch received a call from one of the complex's residents reported that an unknown male suspect was breaking in, believing the man was under the influence. The intruder was armed with a box cutter.

Officers Matt Davis, Thayne Telquist, and Scott Kotterman arrived at the scene before they noticed that the suspect had injured himself with the box cutter. The officers attempted to use tasers to incapacitate the suspect, but the tasers had no effect. Officers were forced to shoot the suspect as the conflict escalated, with the suspect succumbing to the fatal injuries.

The suspect was identified as Kenneth A. Cherry. An autopsy revealed that Cherry tested positive for Tramadol, Fentanyl, Norfentanyl, Amphetamin, and Methamphetamine.

A report from Ohio BCI states that after reviewing all the factors in the investigation, they could not find any substantial discrepancies of the officers versions of events when compared to evidence and statements.

Richland County Prosecutor Gary Bishop also stated that the grand jury have determined that the case was a justified use of force. The prosecutors office also announced they will be no further formal action from the office itself.

Police Chief Porch further stated that an administrative review is currently underway on all officers.
